TiVo Today noticed that Radio Shack has updated their website and our now offering TiVo to their customers. On the site they are offering the single tuner series 2, as well as the popular dual tuner. The Radio Shack distribution agreement came after TiVo announced and demonstrated their new Kid Zone software. While the software isn’t exactly designed for my own demographic, it’s received praise from parents and politicians alike.
Radio Shack has the potential to be a very meaningful partner for TiVo. With nearly 5,000 stores available to sell TiVo’s in, it gives TiVo a powerful distribution parnter to go with Best Buy and Circuit City and with their Kid Zone software it gives Radio Shack a well known family friendly alternative to their current set of consumer electronics that they sell. In the end this is sure to be a win/win for both companies involved and represents a great opportunity for TiVo to further differentiate their brand.

I’ll be sure and pick one up the next time I go into Radio Shack to upgrade my computer to the latest Tandy.

I know that you love the Tandy, but I hate to tell you that I think they went out of production back in the 80′s. I know it’s been a while since your last upgrade, but for such a well respected blogger, I figured you’d be running on something a little more powerful.

If Radio Shack wants my phone number when I go there to buy batteries, what will they want when I pick up a TiVo? A DNA sample perhaps? Maybe they can use it to analyze my preferences and recommend some TV shows.

I know my local RS (suburban Chicago) used to ask for phone number, too, but the last four or five visits they’ve not done so. I used to refuse and it didn’t hinder the transaction. Maybe they just got tired of refusals and threw in the towel.

Bed Bath and Beyond once refused to accept a $500 order from me because I wouldn’t give them a phone number. I was so upset that I just left all the stuff at the front of the store. I can understand why they want this info, but to refuse to make money off a customer just because they value their privacy is just plain stupid.
My contacts at RadioShack have told me that instead of tracking your phone number, they are instead going to make you fill out a TV survey and if you put down American Idol as a favorite then they are going to refuse to sell you the TiVo and save it for someone who really cares about TV instead.
