I originally bought my TV in late 2005, so it was about five years old when it went out. Of course I watch a ton of TV and spent many nights sleeping with it on, so I' probably used more lamp light than most. I've also had a problem with electrical surges in my house and am not sure whether or not that contributed to it. Around the same time my TV lamp went out, I also blew the power supply on my TiVo, Xbox360 and Home PC. Since fixing my TV I've added a UPS connection just in case that was what blew the lamp.

Unfortunately I don't remember the exact merchant that I bought my lamp from, but I found them by searching on Google products and then sorting for the cheapest. The one I have isn't an official Sony lamp, but given how bad Sony is at making things I didn't feel like I was giving up much by not getting the brand name. With shipping and taxes it ended up costing $119 vs. the $300 + the cost of the lamp that the TV repair guy originally quoted me.

Indeed, where did you get the lamp? I'd like to have one on hand and when mine went out it cost me 200 bucks to replace.
